Are you a linguist looking to expand your professional services? Multilingual desktop publishing is a great service for translators to offer. Knowledge in more than one language is a benefit, but with proper training, you can perform desktop publishing on documents in any language! We are now offering personalized one-on-one multilingual desktop publishing training.

Who is this training for?

This training is designed for translators or other linguists looking to start providing desktop publishing as a service. No prior experience is necessary. You will learn how to carry out desktop publishing from start to finish.

Adobe Creative Cloud required.

Dual computer monitors are recommended but not required.

Session 1: Basic Multilingual DTP Skills

In this first session, we will become acquainted with the tools used to carry out desktop publishing, namely Adobe InDesign. Learn why this program is the industry go-to for DTP and build a strong foundation for offering this service.

We’ll discuss basics such as handling InDesign Packages and dealing with overset text. We’ll learn how to solve problems with expansion by using kerning and leading. Last but not least, we’ll learn how to use the all-important Preflight Panel.

Session 2: Working with PDFs

PDF files are a ubiquitous file format. In this session, we will be learning about the differences between print and interactive PDFs and how to export each one within Adobe InDesign. We will also learn about bleed, crop, and slug.

Then, we will do a quick overview of accessibility (Section 508) and how to make a PDF accessible. And finally, we’ll be learning about how to update an InDesign file using a marked-up PDF.

Session 3: Intermediate Multilingual DTP Skills

Here we’ll get into the nitty-gritty.

We’ll learn skills such as working with Frames, Paragraph Styles, Character Styles, Layers, Master Pages, the Story Editor, and more! These features and tools in Adobe InDesign are above and beyond what is available in standard word processors such as Microsoft Word (and much more powerful).

Session 4: Advanced Multilingual DTP Skills

This is where the real fun begins.

Learn helpful and practical tips and tricks accumulated over years of offering this skill. These include using GREP styles to apply Latin character formatting to non-Latin documents, working with right-to-left languages, dealing with burnt-in text, and more.

So, what are you waiting for? Multilingual desktop publishing is a highly sought-after skill that is easy to learn. It is a great addition to any translator’s service portfolio. And, if you take the time to develop in this area, you can make an entire career out of it!
